Exact counts of employer establishments for the 16 consumer industries this site covers, from Census ZIP Code Business Patterns 2023. Each answer also shows where that industry is most concentrated, per person present.
Each number is the U.S. total of establishments with paid employees in one 6-digit NAICS code, as published by the Census Bureau. A chain counts once per location. Businesses with no paid employees are counted separately by Census NES and are not included here.
The "per 10,000 people present" figure divides the national count by residents plus half of employment — the same denominator used in every ZIP report on this site. The county tables cover the 500 counties this site reports on, not all 3,144 U.S. counties.
BizGapMap — free, no-login small-business saturation reports for major U.S. counties. Built entirely from public U.S. Census, BLS, and IRS data (ZBP 2023, ACS 2024 5-year, PEP 2024, LODES, QCEW, IRS SOI). No forecasts, no revenue guesses — withheld cells are marked, and the few derived counts are labelled as estimates.
